Department of Marine Ecology
The Department of Marine Ecology has a multidisciplinary approach with experts within biological, chemical and physical oceanography and interactions between nutrient loading, physical processes, biological structure and nutrient cycling in estuarine ecosystems.
The Department represents an extensive scientific platform for international marine
research and has active research programs at national and international levels.
It is responsible for the National Marine Monitoring Programme as well
as responsibilities as National contacts to the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), the Oslo-Paris Commission (OSPAR) and the European Environmental Agency (EEA).
The department has the scientific and administrative responsibility for the design of the National Marine Monitoring Programme, the technical guidelines, the national database, dissipation of information to the public and politicians and the future development
of the program. These tasks have been a core activity in the department for more than 25 years.
There are presently 68 employees in the Department of Marine Ecology. The
department are composed of
research scientists, advisors, post-doctoral students, graduate students (Masters and
PhD), technical staff and administrative staff.
Department of Freshwater Ecology
The department's most important research activities comprise
investigations of biological, physical and chemical parameters in
streams and riparian areas and the relationships between nutrient
turnover and biological structure in freshwater and brackish lakes,
including the development of methods for restoration of the
environmental state. The department is responsible for the development
of models describing nutrient runoff from agricultural areas and of
stream and lake ecosystems.
The department is responsible for the management and reporting of
the national databases on streams, lakes and catchment areas. The
department plays a central role in the development of the national
Area Information System (AIS), and in NERI's remote sensing and GIS activities.
