Department of Wildlife Ecology and Biodiversity (VIBI)
Research Director: Henning Noer
VIBI's activities are directed towards the provision of a knowledge base for political and administrative decision making, with respect to the conservation of nature and biodiversity in general. The department has specific responsibilities for supporting the Danish nature and wildlife management, with an emphasis on the regulation of hunting and a number of national monitoring programmes.
The Danish landscape must provide space for a valuable and diversified nature and accommodate human needs for production areas, infrastructure and recreation. The Department of Wildlife Ecology and Biodiversity aims at providing the best possible scientific advice for the management of nature through:

· | undertaking research at an internationally high level, |
| · | sustaining this level through international cooperation, thereby also ensuring that Denmark makes an international contribution within the department's areas of responsibility, |
| · | integrating research and monitoring, thereby ensuring that monitoring is based on sound scientific methods and principles |

The department resides at the Kalø Estate offering excellent and easily accessible research facilities in both agricultural, forestry and nature areas. |
The department plays a key role in the implementation of some of Denmark's international commitments such as the EU Habitats Directive, the EU Birds Protection Directive (together being the basis for the NATURA2000 network of nature reserves), and the Trilateral Monitoring and Assessment Program for the Wadden Sea (TMAP).
The results of the department's research, monitoring and consultancy services are directed towards three user groups:
· | Research institutions (for quality assurance of results and contribution to knowledge bases)
| · | The political/administrative system (as contributions to the nature management carried out by the Ministry of the Environment and the local Danish authorities)
| · | The general public (to provide documentation and practical guidelines for agriculture, forestry, hunting, and nature)
The department includes two subject-matter specialist groups and one administrative group:
· |
Biodiversity Group
| · | Population Ecology Group
| · | The Administrative Group
