The department's most important research activities comprise investigations of biological, physical and chemical parameters in streams and riparian areas and the relationships between nutrient turnover and biological structure in freshwater and brackish lakes, including the development of methods for restoration of the environmental state.
The department is responsible for the development of models describing nutrient runoff from agricultural areas and of stream and lake ecosystems.
The department is responsible for the management and reporting of the national databases on streams, lakes and catchment areas.
The department plays a central role in the development of the national Area Information System (AIS), and in NERI's remote sensing and GIS activities.
