Research and development activities

I have been engaged in ecological and ecotoxicological studies since 1983 when I started the research presented in my masters thesis. Today the studies I am doing involves microarthropods, Lumbricidae and Enchytraeidae in agri-cultural land and disturbed habitats. I have gained expertise in using soil fauna as bioindicators of soil quality through numerous studies for governmental institutions and for the industry. My research encompasess studies of ecological interactions between microflora and mesofauna in mesocosms and in field experiments.
Thus, the key focus of my activities has been the assessment of ecological soil quality of habitats exposed to stress of various kinds. Functional properties along with biodiversity of soil fauna are the main indicators used in assessment studies. This concept for ecological risk assessment is important in advisory and research tasks for the Danish EPA and the industry.

My consultancy services are to deliver standard ecotoxicological procedures in compliance with GLP. These consist of laboratory and field investigations used for industry contracts and official bodies. Standards are being developed and employed as standard operation procedures (SOP’s) in ecological risk assessment of pesticides for the soil envi-ronment.

Presently my main activity is to co-ordinate the EU supported ECOGEN project where we investigate ecological and economic aspects of the use of genetically modified crops.

Educational activities

Supervisor of masters students, PhD students and visiting scientists, e.g. from China, Indonesia, France, Norway, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. I received support by the Sino-Danish Scientific and Technological Co-operation and I have received a DANIDA Fellowship grant to cover the stay of Dr. Xin Ke. Two visiting scientists, Dr. Jérôme Cortet and Michael Couerdassier have received grants from the European Science Foundation programme LinkEcol to do studies on soil fauna and ecosystem processes supervised by P. H. Krogh.
