Martin Holmstrup

I am research professor at the Department of Terrestrial Ecology and have been working in The National Environmental Research Institute since 1993. I study the ecophysiology and ecotoxicology of terrestrial invertebrates, especially earthworms and springtails (Collembola). I supervise student projects (Master’s students) and PhD students within these disciplines. My main research interests are included under these three headings:

· Physiology of cold and desiccation tolerance
· Effects of soil pollution on soil organisms (laboratory and field studies)
· Interactions between climatic stress and toxic stress

Earthworm cocoons and permeable springtails (edaphic species) have evolved an unusual dehydration mechanism to survive extreme winters. Protective dehydration mechanism, click to enlarge

Permeable springtails, e.g. Folsomia candida, have evolved a water vapour absorption mechanism allowing them to remain active even at soil humidities causing plant wilting. Vapor Absorption in Collembola, click to enlarge
