Soil Fauna and Ecotoxicology
Research Unit

Bioassays

The Department of Terrestrial Ecology and the SoFaR unit have made a significant contribution to the development and the application of terrestrial ecotoxicological tests. The Department was from 1993-1996 co-ordinator for the EU RTD project under the fourth framework programme "SECOFASE" (Development, improvement and standardization of Test Systems fro Assessing Sublethal Effects of Chemicals on Fauna in the Soil Ecosystem). The final output - a practical handbook - provided accurate test protocols for a large number of soil fauna species.

The SoFaR unit routinely uses some of these assays for ecotoxicological testing. These include tests with species like springtails (Folsomia fimetaria, Folsomia candida), enchytraeids (Enchytraeus albidus, Enchytraeus crypticus), earthworms (Eisenia fetida, Apporectodea caliginosa) and a two-species test using the predatory mite Hypoaspis aculeifer feeding on the springtail F. fimetaria.

The SoFaR Unit also performs, in association with the Plant and Insect Ecology Group at NERI, standardised tests with several plant species and a few microbial assays (potential ammonium oxidation and CO2 production). Finally we perform multi-species tests in mesocosms.
