The minke whale

The minke whale is the smallest member of the baleen whales. It can be found in most oceans, both near the coast and in deeper waters. In Greenland, the minke whale is distributed along both the Eastern and the Western coast. Adult members of this species can grow to a length of 10 m, and weigh 5-10 ton. The minke whale is slim and has a small sickle shaped dorsal fin.

Individuals living in the Northern Hemisphere usually has a white, band-shaped mark on the pectoral fins. The minke whale feeds on krill and small schooling fish, which it filters from the water using its baleens. The minke whale reaches sexual maturity at about 7-8 years of age.
