April - Dioxin: The National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) publishes Tehnical Report, No.486: "Dioxin in Danish Soil"The report presents a field study of selected urban and rural locations with respect to occurrence and geographical distribution of dioxin in Danish soil. The investigation is part of the The Danish Dioxin Monitoring Programme (1) and is financially supported by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Danish EPA). April - Monitoring of Danish Orchids on the internet: NERI has contributed with an entry on News in brief to Danish Environment Newsletter No. 30.

27. February - Online Red Data Book.The National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) publishes a revised Red Data Book so far concerning 259 species of Danish orchids, butterflies, selected beetles, amphibians and reptiles. The Red Data Book documents which species are threatened and which are not. In the years to come more lists will follow concerning the rest of more than 10.000 Danish species which will be subject to evaluation. 27. February - Monitoring of Danish Orchids.The National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) publishes the database: "Monitoring of Danish Orchids". This database provides information concerning the 45 native Danish orchids which since 1982 has been monitored for a longer or shorter period. The database is only available electronically. 26. February - West Greenland. The National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) publishes Tehnical Report, No.482: "Background studies in Nuussuaq and Disko, West Greenland".The report presents the results of five background studies carried out in the Disko and Nuussuaq area of West Greenland. 28. January - A quantification of food requirements in free-living walruses: NERI publishes Ph.D. thesis: "Body composition, field metabolic rate and feeding ecology of walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) in northeast Greenland."
The main focus of this thesis is the quantification of food requirements in free-living walruses. Two different methods have been adopted to attain this goal: (a) the direct underwater observations of walrus feeding on the mussel beds and (b) the estimate of energy consumption by the Doubly Labeled Water isotopic technique.

10. December - Emission of Air Pollution: NERI publishes Research Notes no. 192: "Danish Emission Inventories for stationary Comsumption Plants. Inventories until Year 2001". This report provides a summary and documentation of the emission inventories for stationary combustion. Stationary combustion plants include power plants, district heating plants, non-industrial and industrial combustion plants and petroleum refining plants. 2. December - International award to Danish air pollution models : A prestigious international award has been presented to NERI. The institute was the Gold Winner of the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice, 2003. Contact: Senior scientist Jørgen Brandt, +45 4630 1157.

December - Satellite tracking of common and king eiders. NERI has contributed with an entry on News in brief to Danish Environment Newsletter No. 28. 

27. november - Emission inventory for particulate matter: NERI publishes Research Notes no. 189 "Danish emission inventory for particulate matter (PM)" The report documents methodology, emission factors and references used for an improved Danish emission inventory for particulate matter. Further, the results of the improved emission inventory for the year 2000 are shown. The emission inventory is part of the Danish emission inventories reported under the UN-ECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, and is also applied in Particulate Matter Assessment Report (2003) by the Ministry of Transport. September - News in brief: Satellite tracking of minke whale. NERI has contributed with an entry on News in brief to Danish Environment Newsletter No. 25. 

22. July - Air quality. NERI publishes the report "Air Quality Monitoring Programme, Annual Summary for 2002." The report is only available on the internet in pdf-format. Contact: Kåre Kemp , tlf. +45 46 74 18 42.

17. July – Phthalates in toys. NERI publishes report no. 185> "Compliance testing of phthalates in toys." The report describes an investigation conducted by NERI on behalf of the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Danish EPA) regarding phthalates in toys and other materials directed towards children from 0 to 3 years. In less than three years Danish EPA has investigated all together 136 products directed towards Danish children. They found that 15 of these products had to bee further investigated regarding the amount of Phthalates. In 7 out of 15 products the amount of Phthalates was above the allowed threshold of 0.05%. 23. June - Greenhouse gases. NERI publishes work report nr. 181 from NERI: ”Denmark’s National Inventory Report - Submitted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 1990-2001” . The report is Denmark's annual report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and concerns the emission of greenhouse gasses. The report is solely published electronically. 10. June - NERI seminar. NERI has a seminar under the title: "Black Carbon (soot) - a key factor for the mobility and (bio)availability of aromatic pollutants" by lecturer Örjan Gustafsson, Stockholm University. 6. June - Mink Whale. Yesterday NERI scientists mounted a satellite transmitter on the dorsal fin of a young Minke Whale. In the next period of time the satellite transmitter will tell the whereabouts of the Minke Whales. Researchers hope that the satellite transmitter will reveal new knowledge about the connection between Minke Whales from different parts of the North Atlantic - a new knowledge there is important in connection with the management of the whales. 6. June - Streams: NERI publishes Ph.D.-report "Physical habitat structure in lowland streams and effects of disturbance" . The thesis treats of variations in the connection between physical conditions and invertebrates in streams in Denmark and also the effects from green crop cutting in streams and invertebrates. June - Air quality in Romania. NERI has contributed with an entry on Air quality: Preliminary assessment of ambient air quality in Romania in accordance with EU Directives to Danish Environment Newsletter No. 24.

22 May- International evaluation of NERI's research on marine eutrophication and oxygen depletion. In March 2003 NERI's board of governors initiated the evaluation. An international Evaluation Panel was nominated by the Natural Science Research Council. The Panel assesses that NERI provides sound quantitative advice for the Ministry of the Environment based on research of high international caliber and an efficient monitoring programme. 12. May - Air quality: NERI publishes technical report nr. 435 "Preliminary Assessment based on AQ Modelling. Ploiesti Agglomeration in Romania" . The report is composed as part of a DANCEE project 2001-2002 concerning assistance to Romania in handling the implementation of the EU-directive treating the evaluation and administration of air quality. April - Marine eutrophication. NERI has contributed with an entry on Eutrophication: Status of Danish marine waters to Danish Environment Newsletter No. 23.

1. April - Marine environment. NERI publishes the book "Nutrients and Eutrophication in Danish Marine Waters”. The book gives a summary of the existing knowledge on the supply of nutritive salts to the marine environment, effects from this and status for the Eutrophication (top dressing) in Danish waters. 13. March - Doktoral defence (of a thesis). Tony Fox is defending his thesis concerning the Greenland White-fronted Goose Friday the 14. March 1 p.m. The defense is taking place at H.C. Ørsteds Institute by the University of Copenhagen (auditory 1). The doctoral thesis The Greenland White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons flavirostris. 7. March - Greenland White-fronted Goose. NERI publishes the report The Greenland White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons flavirostris. The annual cycle of a migratory herbivore on the European continental fringe Doctor's dissertation (DSc) "". Ever since the goose was protected in the winter quarters in 1980's the population has gone up from a number of 15.000 birds to 30-35.000 birds in 1990'. 6. March - Deoxygenation. The Research Administrations public press statement concerning the arrangement of the International evaluation of NERI's research on deoxygenation. February - Global change. NERI has contributed with an entry on Global climate change: Burden sharing to Danish Environment Newsletter No. 21.

28. January - Seals and sea windmills . NERI publishes technical report nr. 429 on monitoring seals at Rødsand in connection with the construction of Nysted sea-windmill- park at Rødsand. NERI's studies shows that the grey seals use sea areas that are 130 times larger than the spotted seal, and the grey seals migrate to the Baltic, where they breed on the shores of Estonia. Disturbances are therefore estimated to have greater importance for spotted seals throughout the year. 6. January - Doctoral thesis. NERI publishes the report "Strategies for cold and drought tolerance in permeable soil invertebrates” by Martin Holmstrup. This doctoral thesis is focusing on animals adaptations to extreme situations such as drought and cold, because these conditions are decisive for the dynamics of the population, dispersal and colonization of new areas. The Environmental Atlas contains up-to-date information about coastal types, oceanography, climate, ice conditions, wildlife, vegetation, hunting, fishery and archaeology and is useful for both authorities and oil companies. 15. August 2000 - Atmospheric emissions: NERI has released a new homepage giving on overview of Danish emissions of atmospheric pollutants. Among other things the website contains easily understood presentations of emissions data in the form of descriptions and graphs/figures for the individual substances.
